International Day for Biological Diversity 22 May 2019

Biological Diversity or Biodiversity — is the term given to the variety of life on Earth and the natural patterns it forms. The biodiversity we see today is the fruit of billions of years of evolution, shaped by natural processes and, increasingly, by the influence of humans. It forms the web of life of which we are an integral part and upon which we so fully depend. It starts with genes and manifests itself as organisms, species, populations and communities which lead to the information of ecosystems, landscape and ultimately biosphere.

The UN has proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme of the 2019 is ‘Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health’. The theme aims to spread awareness of the dependency of our food systems, nutrition and health on biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.
