Valedictory Function of Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP)

 “Documentation of Biodiversity to get major boost in Himachal Pradesh through Green Skill Development Program on Para-taxonomy

A four months duration course on Para-taxonomy [Including Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBR)] concluded today at HP ENVIS Hub, Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology and Environment (HIMCOSTE), Shimla.  There are a total of 76 ENVIS Centres in India and HP ENVIS HUB is one of the 29 ENVIS Centres in India who have been sanctioned course on Para-taxonomy by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) under the Green Skill Development Program (GSDP) for skill development in the environment and forest sector.

A total of 11 students from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana and Punjab were selected for this course. The course commenced on 16th September, 2018 with a field exposure visit on biodiversity of Northern Himalayas to Shali Tibba near Shimla by experts of HP Forest Department, HP State Biodiversity Board and ENVIS Hub, HIMCOSTE.

During this course, trainees were imparted knowledge in various areas like Flora and Fauna of Western Himalayas, Geographical Information System (GIS) and preparation of Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBR) to document biodiversity at Panchayat level. Eminent experts from various educational institutes, research organizations and HP Forest Department delivered lectures on their respective subject areas. To give exposure and hands-on-experience of various techniques to be implemented in field, visits were organized to prominent Universities, Research Institutions, Zoological Parks, conservation areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand. In Himachal Pradesh, students made field visits to Himalayan Forest Research Institute (HFRI), Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Central Potato Research Institute, at Shimla; Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Solan, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi; G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development and Great Himalayan National Park at Kullu, Training for Remote Sensing and GIS was provided at Aryabhatta Geo-informatics & Space Application Centre (AGiSAC), Shimla. In Uttrakhand there are many premier institutes in Dehradun and those visited under this course included Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Survey of India, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Uttarakhand State Biodiversity Board, Uttarakhand Council for Science & Technology (UCOST), Wildlife Indian Institute, Botanical Survey of India, Forest Survey of India and Rajaji National Park.
